Feeling a rush: Air drummer at Ravens game draws nearly 7 million views:

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- A couple of days ago, Peter Zirpolo was known for being the vice president of the Baltimore Ravens’ marching band.

Now, he's the most popular air drummer in history.

Zirpolo was caught on camera during the Ravens' season-opening 47-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, rocking out to Rush as the song "Tom Sawyer" blared at M&T Bank Stadium. In the driving rain, the hooded Zirpolo masterfully jammed on his imaginary drum kit, moving his arms up and down to the 1981 rock classic.

The 23-second video, which was posted by a Rochester, New York, sports anchor, went viral with 6.85 million views as of Tuesday night.

Zirpolo, 54, a systems analyst for a government contractor, was unaware of his instant fandom until a couple of friends texted him that he was all over Twitter.

"I looked it up, clicked on the link and I was like, ‘Oh my God,'" Zirpolo said.

His air drumming has gained so much attention that Rush's official account retweeted the video.

"I could not believe it," Zirpolo said. "The Professor [Rush drummer Neil Peart] is my idol. So when I saw that, I was like, 'No way. This is cool.'"

Even the Ravens are aware of the new star in their stadium.

"It was awesome," kicker Justin Tucker said. "He looked just like Neil Peart."

Zirpolo isn't a novice when it comes to actually picking up the sticks. He played drums from fourth grade through high school, joining a bunch of garage bands along the way.

A broken wrist coming out of high school ended his run as a drummer. He donated his kit to a local high school.

About 15 years ago, Zirpolo joined the Marching Ravens, along with his three kids. He stopped playing instruments five years ago and took an administrative role with the band. At games, he has been known to pretend he has a microphone while singing to AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long."

Around 10 years ago, Zirpolo was shown on the stadium's video boards doing the air drums.

"It’s not the first time I’ve gotten caught," Zirpolo said.

This is the first time that he has become an internet sensation. During Monday Night Football, Zirpolo kept track of the views along with Jordyn Johnson, the Ravens' coordinator of events and entertainment, and Daniel Fake, the band's musical director.

The numbers jaw-droppingly went from 200,000 views to 300,000 to 500,000.

"I know the power of social media," he said. "It’s incredible, especially with something this silly. Thank God, it’s been all positive."

A few commenters have critiqued his technique and his timing in striking his pretend cymbals.

What are Zirpolo's future plans now that everyone will be looking for him at games?

"The air drumming will be continuing," Zirpolo said. "I’m not going to hide in a corner."

The understated toughness of Bengals QB Andy Dalton:

INDIANAPOLIS — Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton probably won’t say it, so his teammates will say it for him.

He’s tougher than anyone might think, and he probably would be the last one to voice that opinion.

Dalton isn’t one to publicly complain, so he was clearly upset on Sunday night following the Bengals’ win against the Colts. His relaxed demeanor and smile at the podium hid most of it, just like his jacket hid the sleeve that went from his forearm to his elbow.

• Bucs' play-calling gets fresh perspective

According to the Bengals’ radio broadcast, Dalton had been icing his triceps on his non-throwing arm after the game, the result of many shots he took throughout the day. He had also been hit in the head more than once during the game, and there was one incident he was particularly irritated about.

On an incomplete pass midway through the third quarter, a Colts defender brushed Dalton’s helmet hard enough to yank his head around. Dalton was mad enough after the play that he quickly walked over to an official and yelled that he had gotten hit in the head, pointing at his helmet as he tried to make his case. He was denied.

“To get hit in the head, pretty obviously, if he’s supposed to be looking at me and that wasn’t called. You know you just kind of have to deal with it,” he said.

He added: “I thought it was pretty clear that I got hit in the head, but I guess he missed it.”

There’s likely only one reason he said anything, and that’s because multiple Bengals players said they felt there was a difference in how officials treated Dalton and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Out of 15 penalties among both teams, three were for hits on Luck. Bengals safety Shawn Williams was ejected for unnecessary roughness for a flagrant hit to Luck’s helmet, and Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap was flagged twice for roughing the passer.

Now in his eighth season, Dalton has missed only three regular-season games in his career. All three came in 2015 after Dalton suffered a broken thumb while trying to make a tackle following an interception.

To lose Dalton in that way didn’t sit well with the rest of the team, and prior to the next season, then-Bengals cornerback Adam Jones went on a radio show and said it had been made clear that Dalton’s tackling days were over.

Whether Jones was half-serious or joking didn’t matter, because it clearly wasn’t going to stop Dalton. Last year, he ran down 270-pound Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to stop him after he picked up a fumble by John Ross.

He was at it again on Sunday when he awkwardly tackled Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II to stop an interception from turning into a pick-six. Dalton had been picked off after getting hit in the arm by Colts defensive tackle Al Woods.

His tackle ultimately made sure the Colts got nothing out of the play, because Bengals linebacker Preston Brown intercepted Luck on the next series. It was enough of a game-changer that Bengals coach Marvin Lewis immediately pointed out Dalton’s play in his opening statement.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears have installed a brand new offense and made significant personnel upgrades this offseason, including signing receiver Allen Robinson to be quarterback Mitchell Trubisky's top target. The changes have many in the league believing Trubisky could make the same jump in Year 2 that Jared Goff made with the Los Angeles Rams or Carson Wentzmade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Just don't tell that to Trubisky. "I'm tired of it all, all the doubts, all the comparisons," Trubisky said on Thursday, on the eve of Chicago's training camp. "I'm ready for camp to start." So how is the quarterback going to tune out the noise? The 23-year-old installed his own game plan over the summer: Trubisky quit social media. "I went Zero Dark 10," he said -- the 10 a reference to his jersey number. Trubisky last posted to social media on Twitter and Instagram on July 2. That role is as a leader. According to new coach Matt Nagy -- who has already spent time with the quarterback, installing some of the same offensive concepts he used during his stint with the Kansas City Chiefs -- Trubisky is adapting to the new role just fine."Me and [offensive lineman] Kyle Long have kind of agreed to that," Trubisky said. "Just block it out to be myself and realize I've got a great opportunity. I'm trying to put all my focus and energy into this game and what I've got to do. Whatever anybody else says on the outside, whether it be positive or negative or hype or just trying to tear me down, it really doesn't matter to me. I know who I am. I know what player I can be. And I know my role on this team." "He's very focused, very driven," Nagy said. "Those are generic terms, but the kid genuinely cares about the game of football and his position. He wants to be the greatest teammate on this team, and he knows if he does that, he'll make the guys around him better." Trubisky had a tough rookie season with a Bears team that went 5-11. He ranked tied for 32nd in total touchdown passes (7) and his QBR was only better than Trevor Siemian. Everything in 2018, though, is a blank page. "You can just see what a big step from the end of OTAs until [he was] out here with some of the rookies, just playing fast, not thinking," Nagy said. "Calling plays now is easy. That will get a little more challenging as we go in camp. We were Level 101 early on; we're slowly getting to [Level] 202 with him, and it's just going to continue to grow." As for the social media? Well, Trubisky has held up his end of the bargain. He encouraged reporters to check in on Long's anti-social media commitment -- after all, how would Trubisky have any way of knowing?
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Ravens teammates believe the drafting of quarterback Lamar Jackson has lit a fire under Joe Flacco. On Friday, Flacco brought the heat when asked if there is going to be a point in the season where he grows sick of the repeated questions about Jackson. "No, I don't because I think we're going to win and we're not going to hear about it," Flacco said after the second practice of training camp. That's essentially the crux of the quarterback situation in Baltimore: If the Ravens win, no one questions Flacco's job. If Baltimore struggles, the cries for Jackson will get louder and louder. Flacco has taken the obviously awkward questions about Jackson's arrival in stride.

Teammates such as safety Eric Weddle and running back Alex Collins, though, have talked about how drafting a quarterback in the first round has lit a fire under the typically cool-natured Flacco. "Listen, I think everybody has thoughts and feelings when that initially happens, when all that goes down and what that really means," Flacco said when asked if the drafting of Jackson changes his mindset. "But as far as me going out on the field and things that actually matter, I’m taking it as I always take it. I’m working hard. I come into this building and I work. I try to push the other guys and make relationships with them and really do everything I can to make this team better. I’m not changing that in any way. I think everybody, whether they felt good or bad about it, when Lamar got drafted there was a certain feeling and you can’t hide that." The Ravens' drafting of Jackson was not a shocking development, particularly given how Flacco has struggled in recent years. Flacco is 38-36 (.513) since winning the Super Bowl and has failed to reach the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. The 33-year-old is not as durable as earlier in his career, dealing with a knee injury in 2015 and a herniated disk last year. The biggest concern is how Flacco's production has ranked near the bottom of the league. Among the 12 quarterbacks to start at least 70 games the past five seasons, Flacco is the only one to throw fewer than 100 touchdown passes, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Since 2013, Flacco has racked up a league-high $112 million but has delivered the worst touchdown-to-interception ratio and yards per attempt. The optimism surrounding Flacco in this year's training camp stems from his health and performance. He's showing more mobility than he has the past three seasons, and he's pushing the ball downfield. "I expect Joe to have a career year this year and him to lead our team to the playoffs," Weddle said. There is no quarterback controversy in Baltimore because Flacco is throwing the ball at a different level than Jackson and Robert Griffin III. "I think every year he comes in with his mindset that he wants to be great, mainly because everybody outside of this building doesn’t think he’s elite, and inside the building everybody does think that way," linebacker C.J. Mosley said. "We bring three quarterbacks in,

drafted a first-round quarterback -- that’s no new news for anybody in here. It lets them know that in the NFL, at some point in time, people are looking to replace you, and that’s just the nature of the game." Red kings Some have made the comparison that this year is similar to the time in 2012 when Flacco chose not to sign an extension before the season and bet on himself entering the final year of his deal. But, unlike that time, Flacco hasn't taken the Ravens to the postseason in each of the past four seasons (like 2008-11). In fact, the Ravens have missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons. If Flacco wins and plays well, he either buys himself another year in Baltimore or gets traded (and still makes his $18.5 million salary in 2019). If Flacco falters and Jackson shows promise, that could lead to a change at quarterback. "Hey, listen, to make it in this league, period, you have to be able to tune out some things and believe in yourself and go play," Flacco said. "I don’t know if this situation is any different than just making it in this league."
